Boonville Redemption The Novel

In 2007 I wrote a script called Boonville Redemption. When I finished it,  I loved it, the story, the area, the characters and I especially love the language that was popular in the late 1800s in the Boonville, California area. Maybe it's the history that gets me going but after having been there a few times, to me, it feels like the spirit of the pioneers still live in that area. Though they rest peacefully in the DUSTIES (Graveyard) you can still feel their influence among those that live there today.

The idea to write this story came from a trip my husband and I took with family friends to Northern California. I'd heard about this town called Boonville and a funny language that they spoke there called "Boontling." However, when we arrived most of the trappings of the time were gone, as were those that spoke Boontling. I found a few books (2) that had some of the language and I researched the Internet where I found a small dictionary of Boontling words. I began to dig into more research about the history of Boonville. The more I dug, the more I found, the more I liked it.

After writing a script I got to thinking about the people that I had created in the story. I wanted to know more about them, what life might have been like for them in the Anderson Valley and the times that they lived in. I met a terrific lady over the Internet named Sheri Hansen, she is part of the Historical Society in Boonville. She was very helpful and even asked me to come and speak at one of their meetings.  Through her I met people that actually still speak Boontling. This is a dying language and there's only two men in town that speak Boontling fluently.

We met the wonderful Donald Wes "Deek" Smoot.

                                                                           Don "Ite" Pardini.
We met the "BOONT" poet, longtime friend of "Deek",  and oh so entertaining, Don "Ite" Pardini.

"Ite" has written some hysterical and thought provoking poetry in "Boont." One of which he allowed me to publish in my book "English to Boontling."  This book is available on Amazon.com and of course,  I recommend it to learn more about this culture.

Jeff "Spiffy" Bourroughs gave us a wonderful tour of the entire area. I have it all on film.

We met Bobbie "Wee Bo" Hiatt and James "Bo" Hiatt.
They showed us tons of pictures and paper memorabilia on Boonville.

We went to the home of Edna Beth Tuttle. Edna wrote the book "The Grandma Stubblefiield Rose." This is a wonderful book about some of the pioneer families that came to Boonville. Edna actually gave us a slip of one of the stubblefield rose but unfortunately my gardener didn't think it was going to make it so he threw it away! Next trip up to Boonville I hope to get another slip.

Catherine Nobles Sinnott gave us her book Soft-Shelled Eggs. This is a book of Children's Stories & Recipes. These are just some of the great old timers that have helped to keep this language alive. The more people we met the more we loved this area and the spirit of the people living there today.

In the realm of this story I'll  be introducing recipes of the pioneers from a old cookbook written by Edna Sanders. She actually uses Boontling directions for the recipes. The book is called: Bahl Gorms In Boont which means Good Eating in Boonville.

Now, I'm not always the best speller, use proper punctuation or keep my tense in order, but I tell a great story. Wouldn't it be odd if our misspelled spoken words were visible?
However, I WELCOME your corrections. It only will make for a better book.

I'm making this my winter project and setting a deadline of March 31st to finish this book. Who are we without deadlines? I know that without a deadline I'm a lady that doesn't finish something! I welcome your help and corrections but most of all enjoy the story that will start soon.

Now, I want to be clear this is not a historic "true" story. It's a love story. But the things that happen to my characters in the story are probable situations,  that could have happened to any settler from the early days of our State. The other goal of this story is to keep the "Boontling" language alive. Also if anyone from the Boonville, California history or area have pictures that you think would go nicely with the story, please send them along to be to look at. A small post to your credit for use of the picture will be added.

At the end of each chapter I will list the Boontling words and the definitions. If you'd like to know more "English to Boontling" is available at GreatBalboa@aol.com for $8.95 + shipping.

To the best of my ability I want to allow everyone that enjoys fun languages to experience it.
Please enjoy,
Judy
